Chad Johnson stopped 35 shots in regulation and overtime Saturday night, then stymied three shootout bids to propel UAF to a 2-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association shootout win over visiting Lake Superior (Mich.) State in Fairbanks.
Johnson's work helped the Nanooks (8-4-2) extend their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1). They are tied for third place in the CCHA. The game goes down as a tie for NCAA purposes, but the Nanooks earned two points in the standings by virtue of the CCHA's newly instituted shootout for games that end tied after overtime.
The Nanooks allow just 1.36 goals per game, which makes them the stingiest team in the nation. Johnson's goals-against average of 1.57 ranks seventh in the country and his save percentage of .944 ties the senior for fourth nationally.
Lake Soo's Troy Schwab gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, but Nanooks junior defenseman Dustin Molle of Anchorage countered less than five minutes later with his first goal of the season. The goal was Molle's third career goal in 48 games -- he began his career at UAA before transferring to UAF.
