89-52: New zealander trueman nets 30 points; white goes for 18.
UAA's Southern Hemisphere connection came through big time Friday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
New Zealander Jeremiah Trueman scored a career-high 30 points and Australian Kevin White tossed in 18 to lead the Seawolves to an 89-52 win over Lincoln Christian.
The victory was UAA's second straight and improved the Seawolves to 5-7 with one game remaining -- tonight's rematch with the Preachers - before they begin conference play next week.
Though the score was one-sided, the Preachers weren't pushovers. They played an up-tempo game that had its share of physicality, but they never recovered from an early hole and they never found an answer to Trueman.
"We didn't go through the motions out there," UAA coach Rusty Osborne said. "They make you work hard."
Trueman was more than up to the task.
A 6-foot-9 senior center from Stratford, New Zealand, he turned in a highly productive 29 minutes that included 13 of 19 shooting from the field, six rebounds, four blocked shots, three assists and a steal. Of his rebounds, four were offensive, and he converted three of those into put-backs. And the 30 points more than doubled his typical scoring output of 12.2 points a game.
Trueman's performance helped the Seawolves survive the absence of Kenny Barker, their leading scorer (16.7 points a game) who was suspended for one game for violating team rules, Osborne said.
White was suspended for violating the same rule, he added, and will sit out tonight's rematch with Lincoln Christian.
"I don't want to punish the whole team, so we split (the suspensions) up," said Osborne, whose roster is only 10 players deep.
Barker's suspension juggled the lineup so that White, a 6-4 sophomore who often starts at point guard, moved to shooting guard and Darren Nye ran the offense. White made the most of it with a terrific shooting night -- 6 of 11, with all of the shots coming from 3-point range.
He had his share of assists (3) too, including a long pass that set up Nye for the first basket of the game, a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
That triggered a 13-0 run that included 3-pointers by White and Brandon Walker and a pair of inside buckets by Trueman, who added the first of his four blocked shots during that run.
Lincoln Christian (3-8) played catch-up the rest of the way, never coming closer than 13 or 15 points the rest of the way.
The Seawolves outrebounded Lincoln Christian 41-26 and racked up assists on 25 of their 35 shots. They shot 53.8 percent from the floor to Lincoln Christian's 39.2 percent, and almost one-third of their baskets -- 11 of the 35 -- were 3-pointers.
Brandon Walker, a 6-3 sophomore, was one rebound short of a double-double, finishing with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Jon Wallace, a sturdy 6-6 center, led Lincoln Christian with 24 points and nine rebounds.
The Preachers play in the National Christian College Athletic Association, which is a couple tiers below the NCAA Division II level the Seawolves are at. While UAA can recruit players with the promise of athletic scholarship money, Lincoln Christian offers no athletic scholarships.
"A tougher game would probably simulate conference a little better, but these guys play hard," Trueman said. "These games are good for us to work on fundamentals. Our defense needed some work, so maybe we'll get a little better before the conference starts."
