The championship Western Washington women's rowing team that was sprinkled with Alaska athletes will be among the champions featured 10 a.m. Saturday on the 2009 NCAA Championships Spring Highlight Show. It airs on CBS affiliate KTVA-TV, Channel 11 in Anchorage.
The program includes footage of the Division II national championship rowing races May 31 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Three Alaskans provided power for Western Washington rowing team, capping an undefeated season by winning the women's eight championship and helping the Vikings to the team title.
Audrey Coon of Kenai, Casey Mapes of Anchorage and Heather Kelly of Bird Creek helped the Vikings make history. The team title is Western's fifth in a row and establishes an unprecedented string of success -- at any NCAA level -- since rowing championships were established in 1997.
Coon, the senior team captain and All-American, won her third national championship.
Western has not lost to a non-Division I school in varsity eight competition since 2004.
