Crews, Hadjukovich honored by UAA

They'll be inducted at an Oct. 11 ceremony at UAA's Wells Fargo Sports Complex, where plaques detailing their achievements will hang in a display case along with those honoring 31 previous inductees.

Crews is the third coach honored since the Hall of Fame began in 2001.

Along with the late Tom Besh, a member of the inaugural class of inductees, Crews turned UAA skiing into a consistently successful collegiate programs.

Crews was the alpine guy, the coach who once roared down the slopes as a member of the U.S. Ski Team. He came to UAA in 1982 to work with alpine skiers and became head coach of the entire program in 1990.

Twice he helped bring the NCAA Skiing Championships to Alaska. Three times his teams -- competing against larger four-year schools like Colorado and Utah -- placed fifth at the NCAA championships. During his 11 seasons as head coach, UAA boasted five individual national champions and 48 NCAA All-Americans.

Known affectionately as "Crewser" by athletes and coaches, Crews has influenced skiers at all levels of skiing, from Mighty Mites to the World Cup.

These days he's director of the Alyeska Ski Club, but his nationwide reputation helped Alyeska Resort lure the U.S. Alpine National Championships to Girdwood three times in the last five years.

Both Crews and Hadjukovich are Alaska grown -- Crews grew up in Anchorage and Hadjukovich in Fairbanks.

Anchorage quickly embraced Hadjukovich when he arrived in 1995 after a standout high school career at Monroe Catholic and a redshirt season at Division I Fresno State.

A 6-foot-2 guard, Hadjukovich scored a freshman-record 288 points his first season. By the time he was done four years later, he owned school records for points (1,472), assists (371), steals (192) and 3-pointers made (238). He still ranks No. 1 in steals, is No. 2 in assists and 3-pointers made and fourth in points.

Hajdukovich delivered double-doubles with regularity and averaged more than 15 points a game as a junior and senior. He rebounded and blocked shots, scraped for possession and seemed to be everywhere on the court.

The team's Iron Man Award, which honors the player with the most physical toughness, endurance and court awareness, was renamed the Jim Hadjukovich Trophy in recognition of his grittiness.

Hadjukovich, who graduated with a degree in economics, is the president of Frontier Flying and vice president of Era Aviation.

Hall of Fame members are selected by a committee of UAA coaches, boosters, volunteers and faculty members. Athletes are eligible for nomination 10 years following their last competition; coaches and staff members are eligible five years following their departure.
