East bags Roys Cup trophy with 5-4 tennis win over Bartlett

East eked out a 5-4 win over Bartlett in the second annual tennis battle for the Roys Cup trophy, awarded to the winner of the East-Bartlett matchup between the Cook Inlet Conference foes.

It came down to the final match Monday at Bartlett.

Bartlett's Yinelkis Rosario and Pang Thao won the girls No. 2 doubles in a third-set tiebreaker 10-8 to tie the teams at four matches apiece.

Then, in the final match, East's Kipp Bailey and Sam Chang won a third-set tiebreaker 10-6 in boys No. 2 doubles to clinch the win for East.

Eli Neslund led East with a 6-0, 6-0 win in boys No. 1 singles.

Bartlett dominated girls singles with 6-0, 6-0 wins from Maren Chadwick and Elise Wood.

The Roys Cup got its name from the Roys brothers — Shawn, a Bartlett tennis standout in the mid-2000s, and younger brother Ryan, who played for East and won a region singles title.

Ryan presented the trophy to East last year after a 5-4 Thunderbirds' victory.

Girls No. 2 singles — Elise Wood (B) d. Hyeonji Ra (E) 6-0, 6-0.

Boys No. 1 doubles — David Columbus/Nicola Rupf (E) d. Timothy Alex/Thane Hatcher (B) 6-1, 6-0.

Boys No. 2 doubles — Kipp Bailey/Sam Chang (E) d. Jonah Vang/Liam Walton (B) 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.

Girls No. 1 doubles — Maddy Millar/KateLynn Carlson (E) d. Cheng Her/Choua Her (B) 7-6(4), 6-1.

Girls No. 2 doubles — Yinelkis Rosario/Pang Thao (B) d. Jayla Jordan/Katrina Nordgaard (E) 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.

Mixed doubles — Marco Rivera/Mariah Yurman (E) d. Megahn Reese/Daylan Barganier (B) 6-3, 6-4.

West 5, Dimond 4

West pulled out two wins in tiebreakers to grab a 5-4 win over Dimond in a CIC tennis meet Monday at Dimond.

The duos of Aieleen Kim and Diana Won won a tiebreaker 10-4 in girls No. 1 doubles for West.

The pair of Rachael Alda and Maria Kling scrounged out a tiebreaker 10-6 for a win in girls No. 2 doubles.

West took four of the five doubles matches to take the team win.

Dimond took three wins in singles play.
