There were way more winners than there were races Friday at the ACS Invitational cross-country meet.
A lead pack of five boys decided to forego a sprint finish at the end of a 3-kilometer race around Cheney Lake. Instead, the runners crossed the finish line at the same time.
The five — ACS's Blake Bennett, Seward's Hunter Kratz, Bartlett's Isaac Larson, Kodiak's Keith Osowski and Galena's Jacob Moos — were given identical times of 10 minutes, 9.8 seconds.
"All five them decided to come across the line at the same time," race director Jason Hofaker said. "Now I have to buy more medals."
The meet featured four races — one for senior and junior boys, one for senior and junior girls, one from sophomore and freshmen boys and one from sophomore and freshman girls.
The sophomore/freshman boys race also produced a close finish, but at least a clear winner emerged. William Parks of ACS won in 10:37.5, edging Luke Fritzel of Grace Christian by two-tenths of a second.
In the girls races, Briahna Gerlach of Glennallen and Allison VanPelt of Houston enjoyed comparatively comfortable wins.
Gerlach topped the senior/junior race in 11:17.1 for a 27-second win over Seward's Ruby Lindquist. VanPelt won the sophomore/freshman race in 12:09.4, beating Mazzy Jackson of Grace Christian by 13 seconds.
