South, East claim softball victories on rainy night

The South Wolverines and East T-birds beat the rain and their opponents Wednesday night to advance to the winner's bracket semifinal game in the Cook Inlet Conference softball championships at Albrecht Fields.

South blanked Service 10-0 and East routed Dimond 12-3 to set up a Friday showdown at 5:45 p.m.

Wednesday's loser-bracket games — West versus Eagle River and Bartlett versus Chugiak — were halted because of rain and will be resumed Thursday.

Before the rain sent people scurrying, South and East cruised to easy wins.

Top-seeded South blanked fifth-seeded Service behind Danni Desjarlais' two-hit, eight-strikeout pitching performance and Ashton Jessee's three-hit, three-RBI plate performance.

Anika Valdez added two hits and two RBIs and Sophie Hultberg supplied two hits and two runs for the Wolverines.

In the other winner's bracket game, third-seeded East used a five-run third inning to take control against second-seeded Dimond.

Run-scoring doubles from Leona Taua'ese and Glacier Alaelua helped the T-birds claim a 6-1 lead after three innings.
