Juneau grabs top seed for state baseball tournament

This year's top seed will face last year's champion on Tuesday when the American Legion state baseball tournament begins at Mulcahy Stadium.

Top-seeded Juneau will face defending champion Kenai at 6:30 p.m. Juneau earned the top seed by virtue of a 17-1 league record, and Kenai is the No. 8 seed thanks to an 11-7 league record.

Service, last year's state runnerup, grabbed the No. 2 seed with a 16-2 league record. The Cougars will face seventh-seeded Chugiak at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Other first-round games pit third-seeded Wasilla against sixth-seeded West at 9 a.m. and fourth-seeded South against fifth-seeded Dimond at noon.

The championship game of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The eight teams that didn't qualify for the state tournament will play in an invitational tournament beginning Tuesday at Bartlett High. Ketchikan, with a 9-9 league record, is the No. 1 seed.
