Flag football: West, Dimond escape with wins

West 18, Chugiak 12 (2OT)

Isabella Roberts scored on West's first play in the second overtime to keep the Eagles undefeated in a win over the Chugiak Mustangs 18-12 Tuesday at rain-drenched West High.

Defense made the difference for the Eagles, who held Chugiak scoreless in both overtime periods.

"Defense was the big thing," West coach Travis Cantrell said. "They were playing tough, knocking the ball down and pulling flags."

Maya Baquiran's 15 pulls, two for losses, led the Eagles. Roberts added eight pulls, two for losses, and Ah'Kayzee Galloway-Davis grabbed four flags and blocked four passes.

Chugiak led twice, 6-0 and 12-6. West's touchdowns came on a 90-yard punt return by Sylvia Xaivong that tied the game 6-6 and Rebecca Syrup's 1-yard run that made it 12-12 with 16 seconds left.

West (13-0) wraps up the regular season Saturday with a 2 p.m. home game against Dimond (12-1), whose only loss this season came against West.
