Southeast dominates on Day 1 at Class 2A volleyball tournament

Twenty small-school volleyball teams packed the Dimond High gym on Thursday on the opening day of the Mix Six and Class 2A state tournaments.

The Southeast Conference owned the Class 2A tourney with Wrangell and Petersburg each going 2-0 to meet in the Friday's winner's bracket match with a chance to make it to the championship.

Wrangell swept King Cove and squeezed past Su Valley in five sets in its two matches. Against Su Valley, the Wolves won the second set in extra points, 27-25, and came back to win the fourth and fifth sets for the win in arguably the match of the day.

Petersburg swept Unalaska and Kenny Lake in its wins.

In Mix Six play, 12 teams became eight in 12 matches of pool play. The days' pool-play leaders were Napaaqtugmiut, Shismaref, Tanalian and Nikolaevsk heading into bracket play.

The three-day tournaments continue through Saturday at Dimond High with Mix Six championship scheduled for 1:15 p.m. and the 2A championship at 5:30 p.m.
