Petersburg, Point Hope claim state volleyball championships

The Petersburg volleyball team played like a team with something to prove, fighting through the loser's bracket to claim the Class 2A state crown on Saturday.

In the Mix Six championship, Point Hope edged Gustavus in five sets for its first title since 2010. Both tournaments were at Dimond High.

Petersburg swept Wrangell in the championship and then downed its fellow Southeast Conference foe in the if-necessary set, 30-25 to avenge a Friday loss to the Wolves.

The Vikings didn't drop a single set on Saturday also and avenged a second-place finish last season. Petersburg swept King Cove in an elimination match to start the day.

Point Hope concluded a back-and-forth match against Gustavus with a 15-6 win in the fifth.
