ACS girls open defense of 3A crown by romping past Kotzebue

The top seeds took care of business during the first round of the Class 3A girls basketball tournament Thursday, no one more so than defending champion Anchorage Christian.

Destiny Reimers racked up 25 points, seven assists and six steals to power top-seeded ACS to a 76-46 romp over Kotzebue.

In other games, second-seeded Sitka stopped Galena 47-36, third-seeded Valdez beat Bethel 40-30 and fourth-seeded Barrow defeated Nikiski 55-41.

Reimers was one of four ACS players to reach double figures. Chaunice Carr added 16 points along with five steals and five rebounds, Jordan Todd grabbed 10 rebounds to go with nine points, and Mary Kate Parks tallied 10 steals, nine rebounds and six points.

ACS finished with 23 steals.

Pearle Green had a big game for Galena with 21 points, 14 points and two blocks, but none of the other Hawks finished with more than six points.

Valdez 40, Bethel 30

A double-double by Bobbi Mott gave Valdez the boost it needed to take down Bethel.

Mott grabbed 13 rebounds and hit 8 of 11 shots from the field en route to a game-high 20 points.

Courtney Williams and Katie Crow had eight points and five rebounds apiece for Bethel.

Barrow 55, Nikiski 41

Barrow limited Nikiski to four points in the first quarter to grab an early 13-4 lead and kept the Bulldogs at bay the rest of the way.

Kuutuuq Danner's 19 points and seven rebounds led the Whalers, who also got 13 points and six rebounds from Milya Wright.

Emma Wik's nine points paced Nikiski.
