Alaskans lead Avalanche past Bismarck 3-1

Goaltender Dusan Sidor turned aside 38 shots and the Alaska Avalanche rebounded from a Monday night loss to beat Bismark 3-1 Tuesday at Menard Memorial Arena.

Story tools

The victory seemed to validate the approach of first-year Avalanche coach Jamie Smith, the former Houston High head man. Before the season started, Smith vowed to build a team dominated by Alaska talent, and on Tuesday there were signs it was paying off. The Avalanche goal scorers -- JJ Waldrop (Dimond High), Tyler Currier (Dimond) and Kyle Pitchler (South) -- were all Anchorage high school stars.

Sidor, who stopped all but one of the 39 shots he faced, is an Italian, however.

At 7-11-1, the Avalanche moved into a tie for third place in the six-team South Division of the North American Hockey League. Last season, the Avalanche finished last.

Waldrop scored his first goal of the season, just 3:19 in the game. Currier put the puck past Bismark goalie Mike Reilly in the second period, and Pitchler closed out the scoring with less than five minutes to play with his fifth goal of the season.

The Avalanche converted two of their three power play opportunities.

Reilly faced 28 shots in net for Bismark.
