Warriors repeat as 4A girls champs

Once the game began, things were fine for the Wasilla Warriors. It was the moments leading up to their 56-33 victory over West Valley in Saturday's Class 4A girls championship game that things were looking shaky for the defending state champions.

Galena girls win state in overtime

With star Jenna Buchanan making a game-tying put-back just before the buzzer ending regulation, Galena racked a 67-58 win against Sitka to capture the Class 3A title at Sullivan Arena.

West Valley earns first trip to the title game

On Friday, the best thing for West Valley turned out to be Hannah Mattson making big play after big play in the closing minutes of a 42-35 semifinal win over Juneau-Douglas in the Class 4A state tournament at the Sullivan Arena.

Halftime party powers the Wolves

Trailing by eight points at halftime of their Class 3A semifinal in the state basketball tournament Friday, the Sitka girls did not conduct a pity party at intermission. Instead, the Wolves retreated to their locker room at Sullivan Arena and, well, enjoyed a really good time.

The Wasilla Warriors swept Player of the Year basketball honors, with Connor Devine earning the honor among Class 4A boys and Alyssa Hutchins taking the girls award.

The Alaska School Activities Association will utilize a Winning Percentage Index to determine the final two Class 4A spots in the girls and boys tournaments, with the at-large teams to be named Sunday.
