Plooy's efforts lead Lynx boys to tourney title

The Dimond Lynx survived a first-half scare and fired up their engines in the final two quarters to beat Grace Christian 75-63 in the Dimond Prep Shootout championship game on Saturday night.

After Dimond grabbed an early three-point lead after the first quarter, Grace took control with a 37-31 halftime lead.

But a pack of Lynx proved there was no need to fear.

Chris Plooy's game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds led three Dimond players who finished with double doubles.

Ryan Hanley delivered 16 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Colton Lauwers had 14 points, 12 boards.

Travis Thompson also collected 14, while Michael DuPree added 10 off the bench.

Leif Karlberg's 19 points led Grace, while teammate Ron Fancher chipped in 17.

Here's what happened in consolation action:

• Matt Grubb sank all six of his free throws and two shots from 3-point range to finish with a game-high 22 points and lead Soldotna past Ketchikan 60-45 in the third-place game.

• Eric Gross collected 17 points to help Juneau-Douglas dominate Point Hope 80-51 in the fourth-place game.

• Cole Daniel delivered a game-high 21 points to help Hutchison beat Houston 55-48 in a game that was tied going into the fourth quarter.

Jesse Miessner poured in a game-high 24 points to power Heritage Christian over visiting Seward in a Southcentral Conference game on Saturday.

Jeremiah Ridgeway added 15 points for the Eagles, who trailed by one at halftime and put the heat on Seward in the second half, outscoring the Seahawks 36-23.

Four teams finish 2-1 at T-bird Classic

Parity was the theme at the Lady T-bird Classic thanks to the four teams that finished 2-1 at East High's annual round-robin tournament.

Juneau-Douglas, Ketchikan, Chugiak and defending Class 4A champion Colony finished the three-day tournament with the same record.

The Mustangs entered Saturday's final day as the only 2-0 team with previous wins over Soldotna and Colony.

But Chugiak ended up falling 66-40 to Juneau. The Crimson Bears used a 34-12 run mid-way through the game to win the tournament title, which was determined by total team points in three games.

A trio of Juneau players collected 12 points, while Mahlet Tingley's 11 points.

Liz Meddaugh led Chugiak with 14 points and Emily Watzke's was the Mustangs' player of the game with six points.

After losing to Chugiak 46-44 on Friday, Colony bounced back Saturday with a 67-60 win over Ketchikan.

Alex Coon's game-high 26 points and Allie Grazulis' 15 points powered the Knights.

Wasilla's all-state guard Jenna Johnson and Celeste Colegrove combined for half of the Warriors' points Saturday in their nonconference victory over visiting South.

Johnson, a senior, finished with 16 points and Colegrove, a sophomore, collected a game-high 17 points.

Alex Brewster led the Wolverines with 13 points.
