The death of former East High School football player Frank Tanuvasa, who was shot by a police officer in California, has left a large circle of Anchorage family and friends wondering how the life of a boy who seemed destined for great things could end this way.

Frank Tanuvasa, a 2009 East High graduate and 370-pound football player, was shot and killed by police Thursday morning in Palm Desert, Calif. Officers said he fought them after being caught fleeing a burglary.

The Service Cougars capped an undefeated season with a 37-23 win over South in the First National Bowl large-school state championship at Chugiak's Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium. The win gave Service (10-0-1) its sixth championship and its second undefeated season, the first coming in 1999.
