Seniors lead Newhalen boys to state title
Big games from seniors Gregory Trefon and Tyler Anelon helped carry the Newhalen boys basketball team to its first state title Wednesday at the Sullivan Arena, a fast-paced 91-79 victory over Golovin.

Elmer Armstrong hit two free throws with 2.1 seconds left Wednesday night to give perennial small-schools power Noorvik a 50-48 victory over Scammon Bay that earned the Bears the boys Class 2A state basketball championship at Sullivan Arena.

All season, the girls on the Point Hope basketball team have been told to shoot the ball when they feel like they have a good look at the hoop, so Amanda Sage didn't hesitate to fire a 3-pointer from the right wing with her team trailing by two and 56 seconds left in Wednesday's Class 2A championship game at the Sullivan Arena.

The Class 3A and Class 4A tournaments begin Thursday and champions will be crowned Saturday. There will be opportunities galore for fans of Dimond and Anchorage Christian to cheer, as the boys and girls teams from each school enter the tournament with great potential for success.

Many of the teams in this week's state basketball tournament go by common sports nicknames like Warriors, Huskies or Bears. Four girls teams within the Class 1A and 2A tournaments are named the Eagles, but there is a team at the Sullivan Arena with a unique nickname.

Near the end of Anchorage Christian's 54-34 girls 3A championship victory Saturday, the Barrow Whalers tried to make a late run by fouling the Lions. Desperate to get a whistle that would stop the clock, Barrow's Ninna Pili grabbed ACS's Anna Simmers from behind and wrapped her arms around her.
Jelled Warriors earn the third-place prize
ANCHORAGE -- Last season, Wasilla girls basketball coach Jeannie Hebert-Truax earned state coach of the year honors for leading the Warriors to their first state title since 1982.
ACS star leads girls' standouts at 3A level
Anchorage Christian Schools' Anna Simmers capped off her sophomore season with a state championship, something she and the Lions just missed in 2007. She also took a spot on the 3A Girls All-Tournament Team, something she did last season.
