State's best take to the swimming pool

After finishing second in the last two state meets, the Kodiak Bears got two individual wins from freshman Ila Hughes and made the jump to first place this time. On the boys' side, Dimond won its third straight team title behind two victories from swimmer-of-the-meet Jackson Ursin.

Sam Wicks broke her own state record in the preliminary round of the girls 100-yard backstroke Friday at the state swimming and diving championships at Bartlett High, but the East swimmer won't necessarily have an easy time winning her third straight title in the event today.

The West Valley boys and girls swim teams blew away the competition Saturday at the Bartlett-Chugiak Invitational held at the Chugiak and Bartlett swimming pools, where 309 swimmers and divers represented 17 schools from around the state.

Dimond boys use depth to repeat as state champions

Spectators stood and cheered at deafening levels at the Bartlett pool Saturday, and for good reason. They saw two state records fall, a rare tie in a relay race, a team title decided in the final race and the other title coming in a landslide at the Alaska State Swimming and Diving Championships.
