Victoria Adams of Service swims to a second-place finish in the girls 200-yard IM at the CIC swimming and diving championships Saturday at Bartlett. Adams will be among the favorites in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke at the state meet today.
SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cougars are easy favorite; boys crown is up for grabs.

It's not easy to waltz in a pool, but the Service girls will be looking to do just that this weekend at the state swimming and diving championships at Bartlett's 50 meter pool.
"Unless something goes horribly wrong, I think they're going to walk away with it," said East coach Cliff Murray.
With the fastest teams in all three relay events and 19 individual event spots locked down, the reigning Cook Inlet Conference and defending state champions are poised to take home their 10th state championship, which would be the most titles for any program in the state.
Cougars coach Ben Kitchen said the team has had its sights set on another title from the moment last season's state meet ended.
"One hundred percent that was our goal from the time we won last year," Kitchen said. "The girls are fired up for it."
Service is led by a pair of sisters -- Margot and Victoria Adams and Jordan and Hannah Iverson -- who are scheduled to hit the water a combined 18 times over the two-day event, which begins today at 1 p.m. with preliminaries.
Margot Adams is Service's top swimmer, ranked first in the 100 butterfly and second in the 100 freestyle, while Victoria will be among the favorites in both the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.
The Iversons, meanwhile, won't stray far from each other, as both plan to challenge for titles in the 200 and 500 freestyle. The Adams sisters and Hannah Iverson will each swim two relays, while Jordan is entered in one.
Other Cougars in the hunt for individual titles will be Mary Uselmann and Christine Kirk in the 500 freestyle and Kirk in the 100 breast stroke.
While Service appears to have no peers, a better battle should be for second place among the girls. A slew of teams -- including CIC runner-up Dimond, Northern Lights champion Kodiak, Southcentral champ Ketchikan, Mid Alaska winner West Valley and CIC powers East and South -- will battle for the runner-up spot on the podium.
"I wouldn't be surprised if the point difference between second and fifth is between five and 10 points," Murray said.
One of the meet's more intriguing match-ups will be in diving, where defending state champion Renee Jordan of East will have to fend off a challenge from Wasilla's Rachel Kennedy, a converted gymnast who finished second last year.
"Renee is not going to walk away with anything," Murray said.
East's Sam Wicks also hopes to make a splash. Just a sophomore, Wicks is No. 1 in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke and already has a state title to her credit in the 100 IM.
While the girls competition is expected to be a two-day Cougar coronation, the action on the boys side should be an all-out battle.
Juneau is the defending champion and is led by Cody Brunette, who set state records in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly last year.
But the Crimson Bears will have their hands full with CIC champion Dimond, who will be looking to earn an eighth title -- but its first since 2001.
"We're hoping to give them a run for their money," said Dimond coach Scott O'Brien.
The Lynx will count on strength in the distance events, where senior Matt Summers leads an impressive group of freestyle specialists. Summers is a three-time state champion and ranked No. 1 in both the 200 and 500 freestyle. He'll be joined by freshman Jackson Ursin and sophomore Simon Ross, who are hoping for a 1-2-3 Dimond finish in the 500. Ross and Ursin are also among the top swimmers in the 200, as is David Wilcox.
O'Brien said his biggest challenge will be to keep his team -- which includes a number of underclassmen -- focused.
"It's tough to keep 'em calm," he said.
Other top boys include Wasilla's Jeff Frey, who is the top seed in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, and Soldotna's Winter Heaven, who'll be gunning for Brunette in the 100 butterfly.
Frey will have his hands full in what promises to be one of the meet's premier races, the 50 freestyle. While Frey is the favorite, he'll be pushed by Service's Wyatt Adams and Juneau's Nick Rutecki. All three have qualifying times of 22 seconds or faster, meaning Service sprinter Andrew Tainter's record in 1996 of 20.91 could be in jeopardy.
