Three-time state champion Nathan Hoffer of East leads three T-birds ranked No. 1 in the first AKMat.org wrestling poll of the season. East leads all Class 4A schools with three top-ranked wrestlers, while defending champion Colony and Soldotna have two each at No. 1 in the poll, which is compiled by the Web site.
In the Class 1-2-3A classification, Dillingham leads all schools with four wrestlers at No. 1, Bethel has three, and ACS and Kotzebue have two each.
Nine Anchorage teams will join 13 others from around the state today and tomorrow for the 22-team Lancer Smith Memorial tournament at Palmer High School. The tournament honors former Valley wrestling coach and Alaska Wrestling Hall of Fame member Lancer Smith, who died in 2002. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. both days.
