The Colony Knights claimed three individual titles and placed 10 wrestlers in the top four in their respective weight divisions to earn the team title Saturday at the Lancer Smith Memorial at Palmer High.

The three-time defending Alaska state champions tallied 269 team points to win the 23-team tournament. Wasilla was second with 210.5 points, followed by Dillingham (155) and East (142.5).

East's Nathan Hoffer was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the title at 140 pounds.

Hoffer, a three-time defending individual state champion, was one of three T-birds to reach the finals. He was joined by Mat Malnoske, who lost a tight 3-2 match to Colony's Charles Coisman at 125 pounds, and Skyler Moore, who beat Wasilla's Josh Brown 11-5 to claim the 130-pound title.

East's showing was the best among Cook Inlet Conference schools despite the fact that the T-birds only dressed nine wrestlers for the tournament.

"One-third of our team in the finals isn't bad," East coach Mark Hoffer said.

Moore said East's strength lies at 140 pounds and below, where the T-birds have won five individual state titles in the past two years.

"That's how it's always been," said Moore.

Moore placed second at 119 pounds last season, while Hoffer and Malnoske each took home state titles. Following his win over Brown, Moore said the T-birds have an advantage because of the high caliber of wrestlers who wrestle against each other every day in practice.

"I think that's what makes us as good as we are, is we are the best lightweights in the state," he said. "If you wrestle against the best in practice, it's going to show on the mat."
