Ostrander and Knotek earn Gatorade awards for cross country

Kenai's Allie Ostrander and Seward's Miles Knotek were each named Alaska's Gatorade cross-country runner of the year, becoming the first athletes from their respective schools to win the award.

Knotek, Michaelson post fastest times at Klondike 5k

Miles Knotek was the fastest among males and Audrey Michaelson topped the females at the USA Track and Field Alaska Klondike Advertising state championships Wednesday.

As she vomited for the third time after winning a state cross-country championship Saturday, Grace Christian sophomore Elle Arnold, bent over at the waist, one hand clutching her ponytail to keep it out of harm's way, turned her head and gave an apologetic smile. "It's not a pretty sport," she said.

Heart procedure no deterrent for Lynx runner

Amelia Hennessy was a little girl, maybe about 5, when her heart first went haywire and started beating like crazy. "I feel like my heart is going to come out of my chest," she remembers telling her parents. More than 10 years later, after being part of two cross-country state championships, and undergoing a mid-season surgical procedure, she's now running for her third-straight state title.
