Anchorage skater makes NHL debut
Joey Crabb of Anchorage became the 12th Alaskan to play in the National Hockey League when he took the ice for the Atlanta Thrashers against the Nashville Predators on Friday.

How much respect has former Bartlett High standout Mario Chalmers earned in his first week with the Miami Heat? Despite being eligible to receive as little as the rookie minimum of $442,114 for a single season, Chalmers instead will be rewarded with a three-year package worth around $2.3 million.
Chalmers looks to be a quick study with Heat
Now, Mario Chalmers starts anew. Drafted 34th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves and subsequently traded to the Heat for two second-round picks and cash, the boyish-looking 6-foot-1 guard who grew up amid the long winters of Anchorage now heads to sultry South Beach. He expected to be a first-round selection — as did the Heat, who had him ranked 12th on their draft board — but both sides couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
Alaskan leaves Penguins to join Wings
Ty Conklin, fresh off a fine season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, signed a one-year deal with Detroit, the club that beat the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals. Conklin’s deal is for $750,000, a 50-percent raise over the one-year, $500,000 gig he had with the Penguins.
Although promising defenseman David Carle of Anchorage announced the end of his hockey career this week because of a heart condition, the Tampa Bay Lightning nonetheless honored him Saturday by selecting him in the seventh and final round of the NHL draft.
