Like everyone on the Dimond boys hockey team, Andrew Treptow had one goal this season:
Win the state title by beating South.
The Lynx came into the season three-time runners-up to South at state, and the entire preparation for the season centered on putting an end to that ignominious streak.
"That's all the seniors can think about," Treptow said after the Lynx cruised past Eagle River 17-0 in the quarterfinals of the Cook Inlet Conference tournament at Ben Boeke Ice Arena on Monday.
Treptow and his younger brother, Adam, were big reasons why Dimond started the season winning its first 20 games -- including one against the hated Wolverines -- and secured the top seed in the CIC.
"They're different," Lynx coach Dennis Sorenson said. "Adam is a little bigger, a little tougher, a little higher skill maybe. Andrew is a little taller and skinnier, is more of a hard work, energy, give-you-everything-he's-got kind of guy."
During the winter break as he practiced with his comp team in preparation for a tournament in California, Andrew Treptow injured his right knee, tearing the medial collateral ligament and partially ripping his calf muscle away from the bone.
"When it happened I thought I was done," he said. "I had a great physical therapist. I was not about to sit out my senior season."
Treptow missed 4 1/2 weeks and only recently returned from the injury, skating in his third game Monday, a timely addition for the Lynx as the playoffs get started and they deal with the loss of Grant Dye to a season-ending shoulder injury.
"I thought he was going to be out much longer," Adam Treptow said. "It's good to have him back."
Said Sorenson: "Andrew is kind of a third-line, hard-charging power right winger for us. (He) is expected to carry a lot of energy around the puck, forecheck and penalty kill."
Adam Treptow is more of a scorer for Dimond. He got off to a great start when he was put on a line with Nolan Youngmun and Erik Cooper in place of Eric Vilce, who missed several games.
"The three of them just sparked," Sorenson said. "He picked up a lot goals early. Now that Vilce's back and that line kind of went stagnant, we moved him around a little bit."
The Treptow brothers have played comp hockey together, going to nationals two years ago with a midget team. But playing for Dimond is something special.
"There really is nothing like it," Andrew said. "To be able to have that huge crowd like we did for South (on Friday), it's one of the best experiences you'll go through in your life.
"I couldn't be happier playing with him. He's doing great. I get a long with him great. He's one of my best friends off the ice."
Said Adam, who scored a goal in Monday's win: "I like to play with him, we have good chemistry. He knows what I like."
Andrew Treptow's high school career is down to days, but Adam, a junior, has another season left. He's explored the idea of playing juniors next year but said he'll return to Dimond for his senior year.
"They're great kids," Sorenson said. "We'll miss the one next year and hopefully get the other one back. You can never go wrong putting either one of them on the ice. They're both good players for us."
Dimond will play the winner of tonight's Service-West game on Thursday at Ben Boeke. On Monday, Vilce and Youngmun each recorded hat tricks, and goalie Mickey Geraghty made 17 saves for the shutout.
Eagle River goalie Kyle Haken faced 58 shots through the first two periods, 69 for the game and made 52 saves. The Wolves dressed only 12 skaters and had no backup goalie.
