Carter, Iten, Marrs spar in Junior Iditarod

A trio of teenage mushers were within a minute of each other Saturday, halfway through the 31st Junior Iditarod.

Cain Carter arrived at Yentna Station at 4:11 p.m., a minute before Quinn Iten and Wade Marrs. Iten and Carter both had 10 dogs; Marrs traveled behind nine.

Twenty-one racers ages 14-17 are competing for scholarships worth as much as $5,000 for the winner.

Winners of the humanitarian and sportsmanship awards also earn $1,000 scholarships.

The mushers overnight at Yentna Station and will return to Willow this morning.
