Jordan Burnette of Anchorage broke a 19-year-old record in the men's 400-hurdles last weekend at the Golden State Athletic Conference championships in Azusa, Calif.
The 2004 Dimond graduate runs for Azusa Pacific University. He shocked teammates when he clocked a career-best 52.12 seconds to break a GSAC record (52.74) set in 1989.
"I woke up (Saturday) morning feeling good," the 5-foot-11 senior said in a press release. "My body felt strong and fresh."
Burnette's teammate, Matt Sparks, kept saying he was going to take the 400-hurdles title, even though he had never won a conference meet in his four-year career. In fact, Burnette never won a state title in track for the Lynx.
"I don't know that I was thinking meet record," Burnette said, "but I knew this could be my best time ever."
The next step for Burnette is the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 22-24 in Edwardsville, Ill.
