Seawolves outstanding at conference meet

ANOTHER RECORD: Registe breaks his own long-jump mark.

UAA's speedy track and field team mowed down more records on Friday and made some serious noise as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships got started in Ellensburg, Wash.

And once again, David Registe of Palmer made the most noise.

Registe leaped 24 feet, 8 1/4 inches to break his own conference championship record and outdistance runnerup Zeb Udell of Western Oregon by well over two feet in the men's long jump.

Registe also ran the fastest time of the day in the 200 meter semifinals, 21.92 seconds.

But if the conference is wowed by Registe's recent exploits, his teammates aren't willing to just watch. Michael Madrid ran a sterling 100- meter dash in 10.76 seconds to top Registe's 10.90 time on Friday. The semifinal dash was big improvement on Madrid's 10.89 personal record set just a month ago.

Both Seawolves sprinters won their heats.

Meanwhile, UAA's Kim Brady won the women's long jump title for the second consecutive year and junior Elizabeth Chepkosgei claimed her first GNAC title by winning the women's 3,000-meter run.

In addition to the three conference titles, the Seawolves broke three more school records lifting their season tally to 41.

Brady successfully defended her women's long jump title with an 18-foot-3-inch leap, becoming the second UAA women to earn consecutive titles in the same event. Brady comfortably won by jumping 7½ inches farther than her nearest competitor.

Chepkosgei became the sixth runner in conference history to break the 10-minute barrier, running to a school-record 9:59.16. The Kenyan shaved seven seconds off her previous best performance.

Senior Davya Flaharty of Fairbanks wrapped up her UAA career by placing third in the women's 10,000 in 39:34.23, earning all-conference accolades for the second time. Flaharty won the title in the same event at the 2006 league championships.

Breaking UAA records during preliminary heats were junior James McLaughlin in the men's 400 (48.47) and freshman Shaun Ward in the men's 400 hurdles (54.72). McLaughlin, who broke his own mark by just .01 seconds, had the top time in the event. Ward edged his previous school-best effort by .15 seconds.

With a full day of competition ahead, the Seawolf women stand fourth overall with 30 points, while the men are fifth with 14.
