An auction and barbecue will be held this evening from 4-8 p.m. at the Kincaid Park Chalet to raise money for Willow's Robert Graeber, a 17-year-old snocross rider who was seriously injured during a race in upstate New York in March.
Early in a pro-class race at McCauley Mountain Ski Area, a trailing rider landed his snowmachine on top of Graeber.
Graeber suffered a broken neck, damaged heart, broken vertebrae, damaged spinal cord and much of the skin was ripped away from his back. Graeber spent almost two months recovering in New York and arrived home last Saturday.
Graeber -- the youngest snocross competitor at the 2008 Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo., in January -- is learning how to walk and is expected to undergo physical therapy for the next six months in Wasilla, said mom Chris Graeber.
Even with insurance, medical bills could reach $100,000, she said on her son's Web site, robertgraeberracing.com.
