Colin Flynn of Juneau-Douglas High was named the Gatorade Alaska Boys Soccer Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Flynn, a 5-foot-11 senior midfielder, had 16 goals and nine assists in helping the Crimson Bears to an undefeated season through play on Monday.
He may be even better off the field. Flynn has compiled a 3.87 GPA, prepared and served meals at a Juneau homeless shelter, tutored area middle school students and coached youth basketball.
"Colin is the perfect midfielder," Service High coach Dan Rufner said in a press release. "He plays a heads-up game. He wins the ball strong and knows what he's doing with it well before he gets the ball. He's a workhorse that gets it done."
Flynn has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Division I Gonzaga University in the fall.
Flynn, a five-year member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program, now becomes a finalist for the Gatorade national player of the year award, to be announced later this month.
