Thirteen-year-old Wasilla golfer Rynae Baca fired a 71, the second-best score of the day, to dominate the women's championship flight as the Alaska State Amateur Stroke Play Championship opened on Friday at three local golf courses.
Baca leads Jamie Berge by nine strokes.
On the men's side, Greg Sanders fired a 68 to take a four-stroke lead over Richard Teders in the men's championship flight.
Baca and Sanders are defending champions.
Playing at Eagleglen Golf Course, Baca improved significantly on her opening-round score of 86 last year. Sanders opened with a 70 last year.
Baca first started golfing as a toddler when she and sister Madison, who was 2 at the time, would follow their dad Roger to the driving range in an effort to spent more time with him.
It wasn't long before both the Baca sisters were hooked, and both are playing this weekend. Madison shot a 97.
Today, the men's championship flight plays at Anchorage Golf Course, while the women's championship flight is at Palmer Golf Course.
