The suddenly stumbling Anchorage Glacier Pilots suffered their third loss in four games on Sunday, dropping a 6-3 decision to the Fairbanks Goldpanners at Mulcahy Stadium.
The Goldpanners blasted two home runs to help them finish the Alaska Baseball League/Major League Baseball Scout Showcase with a 1-2 record. Catcher Bryan Beres and left fielder Thomas Myers each left the yard, leading the charge in a 16-hit attack.
Myers launched a two-run shot in the third inning to make it 5-1.
Nick Ciolli went 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles and Jake Dunning went 3 for 4 for Fairbanks.
Goldpanners starting pitcher Jon Pokorny picked up the win, allowing just two hits and one run over five innings. He struck out six. Kyle Brule struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.
The league-leading Pilots struggled offensively, going 1-2-3 in four different innings and wasting five stolen bases and six walks.
Joseph Terdoslavich collected two hits for the Pilots and Joseph Brett Scott and Todd Sebek each drove in runs.
Starter Tyler Everett was touched for nine hits and five runs in just three innings.
Fire 2, Oilers 0
Athletes in Action pitcher Todd Jeffress pitched 8 2/3 innings of shutout ball and benefited from a stingy defense and just enough offense Sunday in a victory over the Peninsula Oilers.
Jeffress (3-4) allowed five hits while walking three. He struck out four, but he got two-thirds of his outs on ground balls. He lowered his season ERA more than a run, dropping it from 5.83 to 4.50.
The Fire were superb defensively. In the second inning, Jeremy Gould doubled and was later thrown out at third trying to advance on a passed ball. In the third, Joey Mills singled and was picked off first. In the fourth, Francis Larson was caught stealing on a botched hit-and-run play.
AIA scored the only runs of the game in the third off Oilers starter Jarryd Summers. Brit Hardy plated the first run with a sacrifice fly and Ryan Enos drove in the second run with a single.
Peninsula got a spark in the eighth inning when second baseman Vince Belnome gunned down a runner at the plate to save a run in the top half, and Kyle Mihaylo led off the bottom half with a single.
But it didn't pan out.
The Oilers also failed to score in the ninth after Kawika Emsley-Pai doubled and Anthony Aliotti walked. Reliever Mitch Nelson recorded the final out for his first save of the summer.
