The proof is in his progress in the Alaska Senior Amateur tournament over the last four years. Toney has improved from 13th in 2005 to seventh in 2006 to fifth in 2007.

To first this year.

Toney rallied from a one-stroke deficit by carding a 1-over 73 in Sunday's final round at Eagleglen Golf Course to win his first Senior Am title.

Toney finished with a 54-hole total of 226, five shots better than Gary Murdoch and Michael Swensen, who tied for second with a 231. Two-time former champion David Barber was fourth at 232.

Toney also defended his title in the Super Senior class.

In the women's tournament, Susan Gatewood hung on for a two-stroke victory over Kim Everett. Both players shot 89 Sunday at Palmer Golf Course.

Gatewood won despite her scores going from 83 to 87 to 89.

Still, she was one of only two women to break 90 in each of the three tournament days.

Everett, the 2005 Senior Am champion, has finished second in each of the last two years.

Mal Frost was the women's Super Senior winner.

In the men's Masters division, Benjamin Sumulong dusted the field in Tiger Woods-like style, winning by an impressive 24 strokes.

Sumulong carded a three-day total of 211, keyed by his opening-round 69. Matt Desalernos was second at 235.
