WORLD CUP ROWING
Borgman wins B final
Olympic hopeful Stacey Borgman of Homer and teammate Sarah Hirst of Seattle won Saturday's B final in the lightweight women's double sculls at the 2004 Rowing World Cup in Munich, Germany.
Borgman and Hirst trailed the team from Ireland by about three-quarters of a second through 1,500 meters of the 2,000-meter race, but rallied to pass the Irish women and win in 7 minutes, 34.50 seconds. That gave them an advantage of .43 seconds over the Irish.
By winning the B final, Borgman and Hirst finished seventh in the competition -- six teams competed in Saturday's A final after qualifying in the semifinals, where Borgman and Hirst failed to advance and were relegated to the B final.
The American pair needed to finish fourth or higher overall to secure a spot in the Olympics, though they still have one more chance at an Olympic berth in the U.S. Olympic Trials next month.
