The 110-mile relay race from Skagway to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, has drawn about 145 teams and at least 1,300 runners. The race is broken into 10 legs -- some teams have members who run more than one leg of the relay.

Foremost among the squads is Take No Prisoners, which has won six consecutive overall titles under that name. Anchorage-based teams employing that team name, some variation, or at least many of Anchorage's best runners, have won the Klondike eight straight times.

Take No Prisoners is captained by Mayor's Marathon champion Jerry Ross, who has been on the winning team six straight years. Eric Strabel, record-holder in the Crow Pass Crossing backcountry marathon, has run on the winning team each of the last four years.

This year's Klondike has drawn at least 22 teams from Southcentral -- 19 from Anchorage and one each from Eagle River, Indian and Palmer.
