The Seawolves suffered their third close call in three days Sunday, this time falling 86-84 in overtime to Humboldt State in Disney's Division II Tipoff Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
Combined with Friday's 60-55 loss to Southwest Minnesota State and Saturday's 66-62 loss to Fort Lewis, the setback puts the Seawolves in a worrisome spot even though the season is young. They're 0-3, and their next three games are against Division I teams in the Great Alaska Shootout.
Adding to the heartache of a winless weekend was the way Sunday's game slipped away.
UAA led by 12 points early in the second half and hung on to the lead for nine minutes. And even after the Lumberjacks tied it 53-53 with 11 minutes, 7 seconds to play, UAA regained the lead on Kyle Doerr's free throws and remained in the lead for several more minutes, though the Seawolves never managed to open up a comfortable gap.
Casey Robinson's 3-point bomb with seven seconds left gave UAA a 74-72 edge.
With time running out, Humboldt State's Ernie Spada launched a desperation shot from 3-point range and missed. With one tick of the clock remaining, Zac Tiedeman tipped in the rebound to force overtime.
In overtime, a freshman schooled the Seawolves.
Elliot Babcock-Krenk, who came off the bench to drill a key 3-pointer late in regulation, opened the overtime scoring with another 3-pointer for a 77-74 Humboldt State lead.
UAA tied it 77-77 with Robinson's traditional three-point play at 3:30, but Babcock-Krenk killed the Seawolves again with another long-range bucket.
Robinson answered with a layup, Humboldt State followed with a pair of free throws, and UAA's Brandon Walker scored a layup to make it 82-81, Humboldt State, with 50 seconds left.
Zac Tiedeman hit one of two free throws with nine seconds left to push Humboldt State to a two-point lead, and with five seconds left, UAA took a timeout to set up a final shot.
Kenny Barker inbounded to Kevin White for the Seawolves, but as White drove for the potential tying basket, Babcock-Krenk was there to block the shot and deny the Seawolves. The Lumberjacks grabbed the rebound and the win.
Babcock-Krenk finished with 11 points for Humboldt State, which hit 50 percent of its shots in the second half to erase the healthy UAA lead.
Robinson poured in 22 points and White 20 for UAA.
Turnovers hurt the Seawolves, who had 17 for the game, including two in overtime.
