Alyeska's 283 inches of snow sets record

BOARDING, SKIING -- With nearly 24 feet of snow in December, Alyeska Ski Resort has broken its record for snowfall in a month.

Story tools

The 283 inches topped the previous record, 274 inches in January of 2001 and wiped out the December record of 247 inches set in 2003.

There were five days in December 2006 where the 24-hour snowfall exceeded 20 inches. Most notable was the week before Christmas when 100 inches fell over seven days, five feet of snowfall in a 48-hour period.

"This is the best December skiing I've seen in 32 years," said Larry Daniels, general manager of mountain operations at Alyeska.

Alyeska is on pace to surpass its annual record of 1,116 inches set during the 1997-1998 winter season. As of Jan. 1, Alyeska has a mid-mountain base of 96 inches and a summit base of 102 inches.
