Newcomers shine in UAA volleyball victory over alumni

A pair of newcomers provided team-high kills and blocks for the UAA volleyball team Saturday in an exhibition match against an alumni team.

Anais Vargas, a transfer from Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College, pounded 12 kills and Vanessa Hayes, a freshman from Salem, Oregon, turned in seven block assists.

The match went five games, and the Seawolves won them all — 25-17, 25-17, 25-21, 25-13, 25-14. The match went the full five games to allow plenty of court-time for the Seawolves, who begin the season Thursday with the first of three matches in Hawaii.

Morgan Hooe, UAA's top returner who earned All-America recognition last season as a junior, piled up 23 assists, 13 digs and three blocks.

Other top contributors for the Seawolves were sophomores Leah Swiss (5 kills, 15 digs, 4 aces), Chrisalyn Johnson (9 kills) and Kyla Militante-Amper (34 digs).

Leading the alumni was setter Kimya Jafroudi (25 assists, 9 digs, 2 kills).
