The UAA hockey team finally broke into the win column Saturday.
The Seawolves used two goals from Austin Azurdia and 34 saves from Olivier Mantha to roll past Lake Superior State 4-1 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Coming into the game, the Seawolves were the only Division I hockey team in the nation without a victory.
UAA (1-6-1 overall, 1-1-0 WCHA) made the most of 22 shots. The Seawolves were particularly effective in the third period, when three of their eight shots found the net.
UAA took control early, grabbing a 1-0 lead when Ted Kozun redirected a shot by Cam Amantea for a goal 54 seconds into the game.
The game was scoreless for the next 41 minutes, a stretch that ended two minutes into the third period with Azurdia's first goal of the game. The play was started by Mantha, who earned an assist along with Eric Sinclair.
The teams traded power-play goals — Jake Hand scored the the Lakers and Azurdia scored for the Seawolves — before UAA sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from Jeremiah Luedtke with two minutes to play.
Kozun and Luedtke both earned assists on Azurdia's second goal, giving the Seawolves three players with two points apiece.
Lake Superior State (2-6-2, 1-2-1) owned a 36-22 shot advantage but couldn't get more than one past Mantha.
UAA is back on the road for a two-game series Friday and Saturday against Alabama-Hunstville.
