UAA hockey team loses twice to Ferris State

The UAA hockey team on Saturday absorbed its second straight loss to Ferris State, falling 5-2 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game in Big Rapids, Michigan.

On Friday, the Seawolves fell 2-0, their first shutout loss of the season.

Ferris State scored three times in the third period to pull away from UAA on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (8-9-1 overall, 5-4-1 WCHA) jumped to a 2-0 lead on power-play goals from Ryker Killins and Craig Pefley, getting the first with four minutes left in the first period and the second less than two minutes into the second period.

UAA (1-9-4, 1-9-3) battled back to tie the game on goals from Austin Azurdia and Corey Renwick. It was Azurdia's team-leading seventh goal of the season and Renwick's first.

Ferris State broke the tie seven minutes into the third period with Pefley's second goal. The Bulldogs padded their lead with two goals in the final four minutes from Tyler Fernandez, including an empty-netter with 88 seconds left.

Ferris State goaltender Justin Kapelmaster made 27 saves. Olivier Mantha, who on Friday stopped a season-high 46 shots, stopped 28 on Saturday.

Four players picked up points by providing assists for UAA. Tad Kozun and Joe Sofo assisted on Azurdia's goal – giving Kozun five assists and Sofo three for the season – and Alex Jackstadt and Zac Masson set up Renwick's goal.

The Bulldogs flourished on the power play. They had the man advantage three times and cashed in twice. UAA was 0 for 5 with the man advantage.

The Seawolves saw some improvement from Friday, when they were outshot 48-22, including 21-5 in the first period. They generated more shots on goal and gave up fewer on Saturday, narrowing Ferris State's advantage to 33-29. In the second period, UAA outshot the Bulldogs 12-9.

The Seawolves are back home this week to face UAF (5-11-2 overall, 3-8-1 WCHA) Friday and Saturday at Sullivan Arena. Both games are part of the Governor's Cup series.
