Cal Miramar upsets UAA in men’s basketball exhibition

Playing without its best player, the UAA men's basketball team failed to generate enough offense to overcome a hot Cal Miramar team Tuesday.

The Fighting Falcons, of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, felled the Seawolves 61-59 in an exhibition contest in front of 590 fans at the Alaska Airlines Center.

UAA was without senior forward Jacob Lampkin, who was benched for a minor disciplinary infraction, but is expected to play in Wednesday's rematch. Lampkin leads UAA with 15.1 and 9.7 rebounds per game.

Junior forward Josiah Wood and senior guard D.J. Ursery paced the Seawolves with 15 points apiece in his absence.

Guard Kenyon Williams led three Fighting Falcons in double figures with a game-high 19 points on 8 of 17 shooting from the field.

The San Diego, California, team went on an 11-0 run to take a 46-36 lead with 13:18 to go in the second half, and held off UAA late.

The Seawolves cut it to a one-point game twice in the last four minutes, including at 58-57 on Kylan Osborne's running bank shot at the 1:05 mark. But Cal Miramar's Jalen Thornton answered with a 3-pointer and Wood scored UAA's final points on free throws with 9 seconds remaining. Wood was a perfect 9 of 9 from the free-throw line.

The Seawolves had a chance to win or tie with two seconds remaining, but a full-court inbounds pass to sophomore forward Curtis Ryan wasn't handled cleanly as time expired.

The Fighting Falcons were hot from beyond the arc, where they went 8 of 19 (42.1 percent). On the other end, UAA was a measly 2 of 16 (12.5 percent) from 3-point land.

The Seawolves also committed a season-high 22 turnovers, leading to 25 Cal Miramar points.

Senior center Brian Pearson started in Lampkin's place and finished with two points on 1 of 2 shooting, eight rebounds and one block.

The two squads return to the Alaska Airlines Center for a rematch at 7 p.m., Wednesday.
