Tough serving gets UAA volleyball team back in win column

Powered by 10 aces, the UAA volleyball team bounced back from a Thursday loss to take down Simon Fraser in three sets Saturday night at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Vanessa Boyer and Anjoilyn Vreeland each served three aces in the 25-20, 25-5, 25-21 victory, which came in front of a crowd of 1,184.

The victory improved the Seawolves to 17-5 overall and 10-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. It keeps them in a second-place tie with Central Washington, four games behind league-leading Western Washington.

Western Washington remained undefeated in 14 GNAC matches by sweeping UAF in Fairbanks, ending the Nanooks' seven-match winning streak. UAF shares fourth place in the league with Seattle Pacific with an 8-6 record.

Boyer furnished a match-high nine kills and was part of a balanced attack that included Chrisalyn Johnson's eight kills and Eve Stephens' seven.

Johnson finished with a match-high 14 digs and had a hand in three of UAA's eight blocks. Vera Pluharova had nine blocks, two of them solo stops, and Taylor Noga chipped in 12 digs.

Ellen Floyd's 26 assists helped UAA post a .224 attack percentage. Simon Frasier (10-10, 7-7) had more errors than kills to finish with a percentage of minus-.008.

The Seawolves head to Oregon next week for matches against Western Oregon and Concordia.
