Alaska Statehood memories

Location: Goose Bay, Alaska, 08/14/47
This photo was taken by my father, William Howard Ball while he was deployed to the territory of Alaska from 6/1947-8/1947 at Ft. Richardson Army Base (near Anchorage, Alaska). Goose Bay is half way between the Iditarod Dog Sled Race Headquaters and Anchorage, Alaska. This photo illustrates a plane taking off to begin spraying insecticide to help eradicate the presence of mosquitoes that were highly prevalent in 1947. It also depicts some kind of fire or explosion that might have occurred. There are also two soldiers present in the photo.
