The first 1,820 doses of swine flu vaccine in Anchorage have been distributed to pediatric clinics, which are offering it to established patients ages 2 to 4, health officials said Thursday.
Young children are at higher risk than other groups for being hospitalized due to complications from the H1N1 virus, said Diane Ingle, city director of health and human services.
The initial doses are in the form of a nasal spray made from a weakened form of live virus. Some clinics were already providing the vaccine to established patients on Thursday; the rest said they'd be offering it starting Friday and didn't expect it to last long.
The clinics receiving the initial doses are: The Children's Clinic, Anchorage Pediatric Group, LaTouche Pediatrics, the Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Center of Alaska, Alaska Center for Pediatrics, and Southcentral Foundation's Pediatric Services.
The Anchorage School District also received a small number of doses to dispense in its preschool programs.
