Joe Redington's grandson wins Knik 200 race

Dog mushing's first family brought home another victory Sunday, this time in the race named after its patriarch. Ryan Redington, grandson of the Iditarod founder, won the Knik 200-Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race on Sunday morning, beating Ken Anderson and Dan Kaduce to the finish by about 38 minutes.

Memorial for Capt. Ridgley

A memorial ceremony was held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Tuesday, May 2, 2011, honoring Capt. Charles E. Ridgley, Jr., of the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, who was killed when a suicide bomber dressed as an Afghanistan National Army soldier detonated explosives at a military base in Nangarhar Province in Eastern Afghanistan last month.

Junior ROTC jump training

About 30 Junior ROTC students from Eagle River High School spent the day at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, in Anchorage on April 20, 2011. The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division hosted the group for a few activities, including a "jump" from a platform 34-feet high in a training tower. Students were harnessed to a zip line for the descent in an exercise designed to simulate a jump from an airplane.

Through the ice at the Dog Park

Andrew Weare was walking his dog at the University Lake Dog Park when he decided to cross the frozen lake to inspect a beaver encased in ice. With the spring thaw upon Anchorage, his stroll suddenly turned harrowing as the ice broke beneath his feet and he found himself submerged in water.

2011 Iditarod: Mackey in Nome

Skating Eagle River

About two dozen skaters put in near the parking area at mile 7.4 of Eagle River Road. The group encountered shell ice, overflow and rough surfaces in some areas, but many stretches of the river were in excellent shape for skating in the shadow of the Chugach Mountains.
