Video: 2015 World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks

The World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, which began in 1989, is the largest ice sculpting competition of its kind.

This year, 16 teams have five and a half days to sculpt 45,000 pounds for the multi block competition, and two and a half days for the single block competition.

The overall theme for this year is "world friendship" which is represented in the kid ice sculpture park, but every artist is welcome to use the theme, or not, as they wish. The sculptures display a wide range of subjects, from animals to fantasy and mythology. The park comes alive in the evenings with the sculptures lit up and glowing under the night sky.

Winners for the GCI Multi Block Classic will be announced Friday March 6, at 8 p.m. live on the web.

The Ice Alaska ice park is now open daily until March 29, from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. at 3570 Phillips Field Road, Fairbanks.
