Don Russell, a local magician, won't give an inch when asked how next week's headliner for the Holiday Magic Extravaganza does those amazing tricks -- oops, make that manipulations. Kate Arnold, 17, of Portland, Ore., suspends a claret in midair, tosses cards about and reportedly astounds even her professional colleagues.
"It's magic," Russell said.
OK, OK, Don. We believe you. The fact is, kids love magic, and that's why the Alaska Magic Kids' annual holiday show is likely to sell out again this year to young fans who will be amazed by what they see.
The event will include Arnold and a return performer, Chin Chin, 19, who hails from San Francisco. Russell is full of superlatives about him, too, not to mention that amazing dove act. Magic Kids work all year raising funds and donations to make it happen. Several Anchorage children will dust off acts like the Sword Box, the Metamorphosis and the Box of Death.
Don't blink -- they are totally amazing!
These kids aren't doing tricks out of a magic set, Russell said. There is some real talent in town, including several youngsters who have performed professionally.
Quick-change artist. Escape artist. Sleight of hand. The terms may sound outdated, but magic is still a fascinating pastime for many people, Russell said. And by the way, some of these young magicians will dazzle and amaze you!
For instance, you wouldn't want to play cards with Eddie Hoecher. Stand back, way back, when Danny Tix takes the stage. And suspend your disbelief at the visual illusions of Ian Florez. All kids. All magicians. Amazing!
The holiday show is a fund-raiser for next year's event, Russell said. It's a way to help the kids get exposure and bring new and interesting magic acts to town.
Magic Kids is affiliated with the Society of Young Magicians. The kids meet the third Thursday of each month to share and talk magic. They go to magic camp and circulate a magic newsletter.
What a great way for kids to build confidence and have fun, Russell said.
Now, if only they could make their homework amazingly disappear.
