AK Quarantunes: Pamyua performs ‘Bubble Gum’

“Bubble Gum,” written by Phillip “Ossie” Kairaiuak and performed by Alaska-based tribal funk group Pamyua, is a song about chewing bubble gum in Yup’ik dance class when you’re not supposed to. For this recording, band members played together from across the globe: Karina Moeller and Kristoffer Jul Reenberg (clavinet) are in Copenhagen, Denmark; Phillip Blanchett and Ossie Kairaiuak are in Anchorage, along with Ivan Night (guitar) and Sara Anderholm (piano); and Stephen Blanchett is in Juneau.

Members of the group made the recording in response to social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to their Facebook page. They wanted “to uplift spirits of friends and family around the world - we are all connected!"
