On Tuesday night, Alaska Fish and Game biologist shot and killed a large brown bear in Anchorage's Stuckagain Heights neighborhood. The bear was suspected to be the one responsible for Hillside chicken-coop raiding, but a post-mortem exam revealed that this bear was not the same animal.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, when biologists received the report of an aggressive bear in the Stuckagain Heights area they thought they'd caught the chicken scalawag. Jessy Coltrane of Fish and Game said Wednesday, "We were hoping the chicken-eating bear was doing break-ins (now)."
But alas, it was not to be. The bear killed on Tuesday was a full-grown adult male, estimated to be between 700 and 800 pounds. Although not the chicken coop raider, this bear was probably a repeat offender as well. Biologists report that he's likely responsible for a slew of recent attacks against garage and side doors in the Stuckagain Hights area, causing quite a bit of damage.
Coltrane said that that kind of bear behavior is "very unusual," adding that the houses targeted did not have any obvious attractions, like chicken coops or exposed garbage. Coltrane said, "(The homeowners) weren't doing anything wrong."
In the meantime, the poultry terrorizer is still on the loose and likely wounded.
