Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman: Bear, a 160-pound mastiff mix credited with saving the life of a Valley woman during a machete attack by her fiance's son, has died after a battle with cancer. In December 2007, Christopher Erin Rogers Jr. attacked his father and his father and fiancee Elann Moren with a machete while they slept in their Palmer home. Rogers Sr. died and Moren was grievously wounded but credits Bear with distracting Rogers Jr. and chasing him out of the house. The dog suffered a cut lip and broken tooth in the attack. Bear visited a Palmer courtroom in 2008 during Rogers' first murder trial.
