Rapper Pitbull gets bear spray during Kodiak visit

Miami rapper Pitbull may have been exiled to the island of Kodiak thanks to a couple of devious writers from the website Something Awful, but at least he is safe from bears.

The Associated Press reports that the rapper has been outfitted with bear spray and bear bells. On Twitter, the Walmart Newsroom tweeted a photo of him receiving his "survival kit," complete with rain boots. The boots appear to be XTRATUFs, a formerly beloved brand taking some reputation hits in Alaska lately after moving manufacturing to China.

On Monday, Pitbull tweeted "this is a first 4 me," along with a picture a warning sign about bears frequenting the area.

He later tweeted a photo of himself on stage, holding a baby, while Native dancers performed around him. He wrote "Thank U Kodiak ... I am honored, truly."

About 250 people attended his appearance at the Coast Guard base in Kodiak. Kodiak Mayor Pat Branson gave Pitbull a key to the city, while donning sunglasses that mimicked the rapper's style.

And be sure to read the Twitter feed of David Thorpe, the mastermind behind the exile effort who traveled to Kodiak on Pitbull's invitation/dare. Alaska Beat's favorite part is when he expresses sincere surprise that the "dogs allowed" hotel room has such a strong dog smell.
